Airstrike Kills Pro-Iran Militants in Northern Iraq: Security Sources

An airstrike in northern Iraq killed at least five pro-Iran militants on Sunday, an Iraqi security source said, a day after Baghdad warned Washington of an attack on its territory.

The raid targeted a location used by an armed group affiliated with Hashed al-Shaabi, a coalition of former paramilitaries integrated into Iraq’s regular military, a senior security official in Kirkuk province said, without specifying who carried out the attack.

Defense officials in Baghdad said, a drone targeted a position of the al-Nujaba group in the Dibis area, near the border of the Kurdish autonomous region in Iraq.

The attack left five people dead and five others injured, the official said.

Police reported finding debris that appeared to be from a drone at the bombing site.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

On Sunday evening, the Iraqi Resistance Islamists, a loose formation of armed groups affiliated with the Hashed al-Shaabi announced in a statement the deaths of five martyrs.

The statement said that all five died in fighting with the United States occupying troops in Iraq.

The United States leads an anti-jihadist coalition and the Pentagon did not immediately comment on the air strikes.

The attack came a day after Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani said in a telephone call with Foreign Minister Antony Blinken that Baghdad rejected any kind of attack on Iraqi territory, according to a statement from Sudani’s office.

Sudani also said that the Iraqi government is committed to ensuring the security of the combined international advisors currently in Iraq. [ns/jm]
