The FA Porsche design studio participated in the development of the new concept.
The legendary American caravan manufacturer Airstream, famous for its design with riveted aluminum panels, certainly does not resist evolution. After all, in the past he has already presented a number of interesting projects, to which he also invited interesting partners, including the companies RAM, REI and Supreme.
The FA Porsche design studio, which is owned by Porsche AG and focuses on designing premium accessories, fashion, appliances, architecture, electronics and yachts, was involved in the latest concept that the company has now unveiled.
The newly introduced concept, with the full name Airstream Studio FA Porsche Concept Travel Trailer, is supposed to represent the next evolution of the brand’s current design language, which will also bring improved aerodynamics. Teams from both companies participated in the development.
Probably the biggest innovation compared to current Airstream campers is the redesigned rear section, which should optimize airflow while driving. However, aerodynamically shaped wheels or a flat caravan floor should also improve aerodynamics.
However, in addition to a clean, modern and functional design, the concept also brings several technical improvements. For example, for the first time in the history of the brand, a retractable tent with insulation is placed on the roof, under whose roof it was also possible to hide a retractable awning. On the contrary, the chassis is equipped with a ground clearance function, thanks to which it should be possible to comfortably park the caravan even in a regular garage.
The interior of the caravan, designed for comfortable travel for two, seems airy and spacious. After all, most of the technology, including the batteries, heating system and water tanks, managed to be squeezed into the floor. At the front we also see a smaller storage space in which a gas bomb is stored.
In the front part of the caravan there is a decent kitchen, on the right side there is a folding worktop and there is a storage space with drawers, while on the left side there is probably a smaller bathroom and another space for storing small things. The back part includes two benches and a table, but this combination can also be comfortably made into a double bed.
In addition, the rear end can be completely opened, allowing even more light and fresh air into the caravan. The lower part of the hinged door can also be used as a practical outdoor seat.
Let’s reiterate that this is only a concept, with a 1:3 scale model that will be on display in Austin. On its transformation into production, Bob Wheeler, President and CEO of Airstream, added: “While our concept designs don’t always make it to market, the lessons learned and innovations often influence current and future designs that make it into our core product lines. ”
