Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi said he would extend the operation Airport train Kualanamu International to Binjai Station. This is one of the efforts to encourage the development of urban mass transportation in Medan, North Sumatra.
“We want to give our brothers and sisters in Binjai the opportunity to go directly to the airport by train. God willing, we can do it this December,” said Budi, during his visit to Binjai Station, quoted from a written statement, Tuesday (16/5/2023).
Currently, the airport train from Kualanamu International Airport has been operating up to Medan Station. By extending it to Binjai Station, there will be an additional 23 km of trips.
Budi said that he would continue to increase the headway or waiting time between airport trains every 15 minutes.
“We want to ensure that commuter mass transit facilities in the city of Medan and its surroundings have increased so that users also increase and provide ease of mobility for people in Medan and its surroundings,” he added.
In addition to the airport train, to encourage urban mass transportation, Budi said, in the future a train will also be operated from Binjai Station-Besitang Station to Sei Sirah Station with a length of 88.55 km.
The train will pass through nine stations, including Binjai Station, Kuala Bingai, Stabat, Tanjung Selamat, Tanjung Pura, Gebat, Pangkalan Brandan, Besitang, as well as Sei Sirah. The total travel time is approximately 2 hours 38 minutes and the track capacity is 65 trains and 530 people per day.
During the visit, the Director General of Railways, Risal Wasal, Director General of Railway Traffic, Djarot Tri Wardhono, and Head of the Medan Class II Railway Engineering Center, Dedik Tri Istiantara, were also present.
