Since Thursday, holidaymakers from the EU have been able to enter Austria with the 3-G certificate without quarantine. For the rest of the world – with the exception of virus variant areas – full immunization is a prerequisite for quarantine-free entry. According to airport board member Julian Jäger, this has a positive effect: “We hope – at least on some days – through relaxed entry regulations to come to more than 50,000 passengers per day.”
Half as many passengers as before Corona
It is particularly gratifying for city tourism in Vienna that tourists from Arab, Asian and North American regions can now come, provided they are vaccinated. In the summer before Corona, around 100,000 passengers per day were processed at Vienna Airport. But now there is still a great deal of uncertainty overall when it comes to travel, especially the utilization of the aircraft is still open. For the summer, Jäger expects an occupancy rate of around 50 percent compared to the level before the pandemic, and over the entire year he expects an occupancy rate of around 40 percent.
Currently, the focus is on the start of the holiday, where an increase compared to the previous weeks can be expected. There is always good news, but on the other hand, the spread of the delta variant can be heard over and over again. According to Jäger, the most important thing is that as many people as possible get vaccinated in order to overcome the crisis quickly. “We are optimistic that we have survived the worst and expect a significant number of passengers over the summer,” said Jäger. It will take some time before Vienna Airport can handle as many passengers as it did before Corona.
