One week before the end of the Hamburg summer vacation, the airport draws a mixed balance. The number of passengers can be increased. The processes, on the other hand, also work under Corona travel conditions.
The occupancy rate at Hamburg Airport remains far below the level of before Corona, even on peak days. So far there have been a little more than 29,000 passengers on the day of the holiday with the most traffic. In previous years, more than twice as many people flew on vacation or came back here every day.
Janet Niemeyer from the airport told NDR 90.3 that the travelers were generally well prepared for the special Corona regulations. Complaints about long queues and crowds are therefore only sporadic and it is precisely for these situations that a mask is required in the terminals.
Risk areas and quarantine requirements can be felt directly
On the one hand, Niemeyer sees a lot of catching up to do with people after vacation. On the other hand, every new message about risk areas and quarantine requirements can be felt directly. An outlook for late summer and autumn is difficult, according to Niemeyer: “The situation is still very dynamic and very dependent on travel restrictions. Even the airlines still only plan a few weeks in advance.”
Short-time work until the end of the year
Hamburg Airport is planning short-time work for its employees by the end of the year. Economically, according to the airport, the minus will be in the three-digit million range. At the moment, it is expected that the number of passengers will return to pre-pandemic levels in 2025 at the earliest.
