Lufthansa will order 22 state-of-the-art long-haul jets with a total list price of $7.5 billion.
The agreement includes 10 Airbus A350-1000, five Airbus A350-900 and seven Boeing 787-9, and the aircraft will be delivered starting in the middle of this decade, the company said.
Lufthansa is also in advanced negotiations to acquire other long-haul aircraft, which could be made available in the near future, it added.
The aircraft order means Lufthansa has secured more than 50 state-of-the-art long-haul aircraft for its group airlines since the pandemic began, CEO Carsten Spohr said in a statement.
They “will also play a decisive role in helping us achieve our carbon reduction targets by 2030, as fuel-efficient aircraft incorporating the latest manufacturing technology, are by far the biggest lever to provide more climate protection in the aviation sector,” added Spohr.
Airbus said the order brought Lufthansa’s A350 order book to a total of 60 aircraft.
Germany’s flagship airline also announced this week that members of the supervisory board have agreed to extend Spohr’s contract as CEO for another five years.
Lufthansa and Airbus also announced that they have signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen their cooperation on sustainability, including sustainable aviation fuels and exploring the use of hydrogen.
