Airline Industry Ramps Up In-Flight VOD Services to Meet Customer Demand

Recently, the number of passengers looking for VOD services such as movies, dramas, and entertainment on board has increased significantly, and the airline industry has rolled up its sleeves to strengthen content.

According to the aviation industry on the 20th, Air Seoul updated its in-flight VOD content on the 18th to welcome the new year of 2024. The company explains that through this update, the content that customers can watch, including popular dramas and entertainment programs, has been significantly expanded.

VOD (Video On Demand) refers to a service that allows users to freely view videos over the Internet by simply requesting a broadcast. Through the VOD service, passengers can watch the latest movies, dramas, and entertainment shows from the sky. Among domestic LCCs, Air Seoul is the first to provide in-flight VOD service on all international routes.

Previously, in February 2020, Air Seoul implemented the ‘Cinema in the Sky’ service, which allows you to watch movies and other screenings through the in-flight monitor. Afterwards, as international flights were halted due to COVID-19, the in-flight VOD service was also suspended, but the service was resumed after about three years in response to the pandemic in January of last year.

An Air Seoul official said, “The response and satisfaction with in-flight VOD content is particularly high on Southeast Asian routes that operate for more than 4 to 5 hours. Additionally, as the purchase of snacks such as beer naturally increases when using in-flight content, additional sales are important for LCCs. “The effect of providing in-flight VOD is significant,” he explained.

Asiana Airlines updates VOD content every other month. As of 2024, updates will be carried out in odd months. Except for some delays due to the holdback period, customers can watch the latest movies for free.

The holdback period refers to the time it takes for a movie to move to another distribution platform after the screening ends at the movie theater. The list of content screened every month is updated on the website.

Korean Air is also strengthening its VOD content. This is to meet the increasingly diverse needs of customers, including movies, TV programs, and audio programs. Audio content, including the latest movies, TV series, and music, is updated every month to keep up with rapidly changing trends.

Additionally, for some domestic and short-distance routes, there are models that allow media services to be used on personal mobile devices such as mobile phones. This is an evolved service that responds to the trend of watching media on personal mobile phones, allowing passengers to conveniently enjoy a variety of in-flight entertainment for free by connecting to the in-flight network.

A Korean Air official said, “Korean Air has recently upgraded its AVOD screen to introduce a modern interface (UI) and user experience (UX),” and added, “Customer satisfaction has increased as carefully selected content can be viewed on a more convenient and sophisticated screen.” “He said.
