One of the two employees was fined 700 euros, the other can explain it to the judge. The alcohol limit for cabin crew is the same as for novice drivers, says police spokesperson Thérèse Ariaans: 0.2 per mille.
The employee who received the fine far exceeded that limit. The police spokesperson calls the fine ‘hefty’. “And the other one was even more above that. Then you will be sent to the Public Prosecution Service for assessment.” When someone is referred to the court depends on the situation, she says. There is therefore no fixed blood alcohol level above which someone is referred. “There are no hard standards for that.”
The check was a random sample, says Ariaans. “We do that more often.” The Dutch police do not want to say exactly how often. “We don’t say that. We don’t want to make them wiser. But on a random basis.” It is not the first time that airline employees have been caught during such checks who have had too much to drink. “I don’t have numbers ready, but it happens more often.”
Cabin crew include stewards and pursers (the manager of the stewards or stewardesses on scheduled aircraft).
