Air transportation has been facilitated since Thursday

From Thursday, flights to and from Latvian airports are allowed to all European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA) countries, except Spain, Andorra, Malta and Luxembourg, Aivis Vincevs, a representative of the Civil Aviation Agency (CAA), informed LETA.

He explained that on Wednesday, the government-backed amendments to the Cabinet of Ministers’ regulations on epidemiological safety measures to limit the spread of Covid-19 infection came into force.

Vincev pointed out that the EU’s average 14-day cumulative morbidity rate on August 28, according to which flights are not allowed only to Spain, Andorra, Malta and Luxembourg, is currently being taken into account for air traffic restrictions.

On Friday, September 4, the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (SPKC) will publish a list of new cumulative morbidity rates. If in another country the 14-day average cumulative morbidity rate is twice the EU average, flights to / from will not be allowed from the third day after the list is published, ie on the following Monday, 7 September.

On the other hand, if the 14-day cumulative figure falls below twice the EU average in one of the four countries to which flights are currently not allowed, airlines will be able to resume flights to them immediately.

As reported, The Cabinet of Ministers agreed on Wednesday to allow air travel to countries where the average 14 – day cumulative morbidity rate in the EU has been exceeded twice, while stipulating that 14 – day self – isolation will be mandatory upon return from these countries.

According to the EM, for example, on 26 August, the average 14-day cumulative morbidity rate in the EU was 46, thus rounding the threshold for the transport ban to be 90 per 100,000 inhabitants.

Until yesterday, citizens of the EEA, Switzerland and the United Kingdom and persons legally residing in these countries were allowed to enter Latvia without restrictions if the cumulative incidence of Covid-19 infection in their country of origin did not exceed 16 cases per 100,000 population in the last 14 days.

Every Friday, an updated list of countries is published on the Latvian SPKC website, according to which it is determined which countries’ immigrants must observe 14 days of self-isolation upon arrival in Latvia.
