Frankfurt/Main (dpa) – After the warning strike by the Verdi union, passengers at Frankfurt Airport this Saturday still have to expect delays and individual flight cancellations. It will take a while for the situation to normalize, said a spokeswoman for the operator Fraport. After the strike on Friday, there was a backlog that had to be worked off. It is still unclear whether this can take place during the course of Saturday or whether the effects of the strike will still be felt on Sunday.
After the end of the night flight ban at 5 a.m., operations started normally. However, there are more take-offs and landings this Saturday to clear the backlog. By morning, there were 53 cancellations of flights out of a total of around 1,150 planned flight movements, as the spokeswoman said. She reported queues in front of the security checkpoints. Some airlines also use larger aircraft.
The spokeswoman recommended passengers to get information about their flight from their airline. In addition, passengers should be at the check-in counter in good time, Fraport recommends 2.5 hours before departure.
A total of seven airports in Germany have been largely paralyzed since Friday morning by the labor dispute. The Verdi union had called for an all-day walkout to increase the pressure on employers in several ongoing collective bargaining rounds. In addition to Frankfurt, Munich, Bremen and Hanover, Stuttgart, Hamburg and Dortmund were also affected.
