Frankfurt / Main (dpa) – The freight division of Lufthansa, which was successful in the Corona crisis, continues to expect high demand for its transport offers. On Friday, the new airline boss Dorothea von Boxberg named empty warehouses in the USA, the improved mood in European industry and the strong increase in the export economy in China as good prerequisites for the current year. The most important customer sectors automotive and pharmaceuticals as well as the increasing e-commerce shipments developed well.

The distribution of the corona vaccines is likely to bring less than initially expected. You expect that only around 45 percent of the total amount will be transported by plane, said von Boxberg. So far, there have only been a few orders, but that should change in the coming quarters. According to Lufthansa Cargo estimates, Europe will export significantly more vaccine net than it imports. Lufthansa Cargo expects to transport 10,000 tonnes of the expected global volume of 87,000 tonnes. In terms of quantity, this is not a big challenge. Last year the company transported around 80,000 tons of temperature-sensitive pharmaceutical products.

Last year Lufthansa Cargo flown in a record operating profit of 772 million euros (adjusted EBIT) with a turnover of 2.76 billion euros and thus supported the entire group, which made a billion-dollar loss due to the Corona crisis. Because of the scarce supply of freight capacities, prices had risen significantly.
