Air Serbia E195 Collision at Belgrade Airport: Crew Turns onto Wrong Point

BELGRADE – A long crack in the fuselage, but no injuries: An Embraer E195 collided with parts of the runway on the ground during a take-off run in Belgrade. The Air Serbia flight was scheduled to fly to Düsseldorf on Sunday evening. Did the crew turn onto the runway at the wrong point?

Nikola Tesla Airport Belgrade, February 18, 2024: Air Serbia 324 picks up speed for takeoff for the evening flight to Düsseldorf.

But the E195 does not move from the take-off area – the aircraft accelerates – according to radar data – around 1,100 meters – beyond the end of the runway – and collides with parts of the lighting system. The masts slice through parts of the fuselage before the E195 gains altitude.

The pilots turn around and bring the E195 safely to the ground. Images circulating on social media show significant damage to the fuselage and wing box of the E195 OY-DGC.

The aircraft belongs to the fleet of Air Serbia partner Marathon. The airline initially spoke of a technical problem during takeoff. According to radar data, the crew turned onto runway 30L at intersection D5 – from this point there is only around 1,300 meters of runway available. As a rule, the line-up is done via D6.
