Air pollution in Madrid is so bad that residents were advised by police on Wednesday not to exercise outdoors.
Air pollution has reached a level where it can harm people’s health. The department that monitors air quality in the Spanish capital warns against this.
Police requests Madrid residents not to go out unless necessary. Children under the age of 6, people over the age of 65, and people with lung and heart problems are especially advised to stay indoors. City council renews police warning.
Spain is doing on average by European standards quite good in terms of reducing air pollution. That picture is distorted, because big cities emit a lot. This makes air pollution a problem in densely populated areas. Madrid is one of the few European cities where air pollution continues during the corona lockdowns increased.
Last week Spain was reprimanded by the European Court of Justice. Between 2010 and 2018, much more nitrogen oxide (NO2) was emitted in Madrid and Barcelona than allowed by European standards. The European Commission is still evaluating a possible sanction for Spain.
