From September 2024 it will be possible to sleep in a real bed during a long flight. Airline Air New Zealand will offer bunk beds in which passengers can sleep for part of the flight next year.
Those who fly business class can often stretch out, but now that is also possible for budget travelers. It is not really budget, by the way, because it comes with a hefty price tag. The airline will charge around 500 New Zealand dollars (about 289 euros) for four hours of sleep in a bunk bed.
Due to the lack of space on the plane, the bunk beds are close together. The airline says they will replace the bedding between each sleep session.
The bunk beds will be used for the first time on the airline’s long-haul flights from Auckland to New York and Chicago. Both flights take more than fifteen hours.
Passengers who have booked a bed cannot sleep through the entire flight. A ‘sleeping session’ in a bunk lasts only four hours and passengers can only book one session per flight.
