Air New Zealand Launches World’s First Sleep Economy Class “Skynest” with Pod Sleeping Cabins for Long-Distance Flights

The most feared thing about taking a long-distance plane is that you won’t be able to get there! Air New Zealand launched the world’s first sleep economy class “Skynest”, which is equipped with reading lights, earplugs, seat belts, sheets, pillows, etc. Passengers can lie down and sleep, and the estimated charge is about 2,000 to 3,000 Hong Kong dollars for four hours. The pod will debut in September next year.

According to comprehensive foreign media reports, Air New Zealand (Air New Zealand) announced the concept of the world’s first economy class sleeper “Skynest” last year, and showed the prototype of the “Skynest” cabin design for the first time last week, as well as providing more information about booking, Pricing and other details.

Air New Zealand said each pod would include a pillow, sheet and blanket, and passengers would be hung a few feet away from other passengers. The pods would not be fully enclosed, but there would be a curtain between passengers . Bedding will be changed after each use and 30 minutes transition time will be allowed for this. The lights will come on at the end of each sleeping period, and the crew will politely wake sleeping passengers. The sleeping pods feature USB charging ports, reading lights, earplugs, and seat belts to comply with safety regulations.

Limited to one person only one booking per person

The 6-person bunk bed cabin is expected to debut in September next year. In order to allow more passengers to experience the sleeping cabin, each passenger can only book one sleep session, that is, 4 hours, and each bed can only sleep one person at a time. The child sleeps together. Airline representatives said last year that the company has done a lot of research around sleep cycles and found that a typical sleep cycle is about 90 minutes, so four hours of sleep gives passengers a chance to relax, fall asleep and wake up.

4 hours cost about HKD 2,000 to 3,000

Air New Zealand’s chief customer and sales officer, Leanne Geraghty, said the sleeping pods were an example of the airline “pushing the boundaries of what’s possible”, but the specifics of the booking process were still being worked out and prices had yet to be set, in addition to the normal airfares. In addition, expect to pay an additional 400 to 600 NZD (approximately HKD 2,000 to 3,000) for booking a sleeping cabin for 4 hours.

The sleeping pods will make their debut on the airline’s long-haul flights, including the Auckland-New York and Chicago routes, both of which are more than 15 hours long, with the Auckland-New York nonstop at 17 hours, the most in the world. On one of the long-distance routes, the sleeping cabin is located between the economy class and the premium economy class.
