“Air National Guard Member Accused of Disclosing Defense Secrets on Social Network Discord – Faces 25 Years in Prison”

Jack Teixeira, 21, who worked in the Air National Guard, is accused of having posted on a discussion forum on the social network Discord numerous documents classified as defense secret, relating in particular to the war in Ukraine or the espionage of countries allies, leaks that embarrassed Washington.

These documents related to extremely sensitive subjects, and suggested in particular concerns of the American intelligence services as to the viability of a Ukrainian counter-offensive against Russian forces or the collection of intelligence on close allies of the United States, in particular Israel and South Korea.

Prosecutors argued Friday about the dangerousness of Jack Teixeira, suggesting that he could still have access to classified documents, and that certain “hostile states” could help him escape.

25 years in prison

They also pointed out that the young man had in the past made threats on social networks. The military’s lawyers, for their part, argued that their client no longer had access to such documents, ensuring that the authorities exaggerated the risk posed by the young man and pleading for him to stay with his father while awaiting trial.
