Air India places record orders for 500 aircraft with Airbus and Boeing

These are 400 so-called narrow-body aircraft, single-aisle aircraft. In addition, Air India is on order for 100 multi-aisle widebody aircraft. The deal includes Airbus’ A350 and competitor Boeing’s 787 and 777.

Last year ailing Air India was taken over by conglomerate Tata. The airline was kept afloat for decades at the expense of the Indian taxpayer. However, according to sources, the new owner has ambitious plans to bring the company back as an international player.

Airbus and Boeing declined to comment on the deal to Reuters. Tata Group has not responded yet.
