End clap for the Airbus A380 at Air France. In August 2019, the airline announced its decision to withdraw the 10 A380s from the company’s fleet by 2022. The coronavirus crisis is now accelerating the movement: Air France has announced that none of its 9 remaining A380s will resume service.
Air France, like other global airlines, criticize the A380 for being too fuel-intensive and not profitable enough. This withdrawal “is part of the Air France-KLM group’s fleet simplification strategy aimed at making the fleet more competitive, by continuing its transformation with more efficient and modern aircraft with an environmental footprint”, thus justifies Air France. . The company recognizes that the Covid-19 crisis delivered the final blow.
The A380 consumes 20 to 25% more fuel
The A380 and its 4 reactors consume 20 to 25% more fuel per seat and emit more CO² than new generation long-haul aircraft, in particular the A350 and A321LR at Airbus and the B787 at Boeing.
Before the coronavirus, the A380s served New York, Washington, Los Angeles, Shanghai, Singapore and Johannesburg year-round. Seasonal flights had been set up to Miami and Abidjan.
It is therefore the end of an era for passengers, many of whom favor the A380 for its comfort, space and soundproofing. Have you ever traveled by A380? What do you think of this device? We await your comments below!
