Air France’s planes use old fuel oil, and the company has halved its carbon dioxide emissions in two demonstration flights.

To illustrate the ways in which the goal of climate protection can be achieved, the airline demonstrates some of the planned actions on two of its flights departing from Paris.

The first flight was to Montreal and was operated by Airbus A350 on May 3, and the second to Lisbon on May 4, operated by Airbus A220. These planes of the last
generation consume 20 to 25 percent less fuel.

The flight to Montreal was loaded with 16 percent sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and the flight to
Lisbon – 30 percent SAF, compared to 1 percent currently used for flights departing from
France in accordance with these provisions. These fuels are produced from biomass, for example
used cooking fat. They allow an average reduction of 80 percent of CO2 emissions compared to kerosene.
