A British aerial bomb was discovered on Wednesday morning during construction work at the Burchardkai container terminal in the Hamburg district of Waltershof. It was defused by midday. The nearby Autobahn 7 had to be temporarily closed for this purpose.

“The bomb disposal service of the Hamburg fire department has successfully defused the bomb in Waltershof. The measures taken by the fire department and the police are being withdrawn,” the fire department announced at 12.25 p.m. via the short message service X. According to the fire department, the explosive device was a 250 kilogram bomb from the Second World War. It was discovered on the grounds of the largest container terminal of the Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA).

A7 and Elbe tunnel affected by closure

The fire department set a 300-meter-long cordon radius and a 500-meter-long warning radius around the site. Two people were reported to have had to leave their homes in the cordoned-off area. Some companies were also evacuated. The nearby Autobahn 7 was temporarily completely closed between the Othmarschen and Waltershof junctions. This also affected the Elbe tunnel. There were traffic jams stretching for kilometers in both directions. According to a fire department spokesman, the Köhlbrand Bridge did not have to be closed.
