Tony Fernandes, CEO of Air Asia, expects countries in Asia to require vaccination against Covid-19 as a prerequisite for entry to travelers in the future …
Speaking at a CAPA (Center for Aviation) event, the CEO of Air Asia believes that the vaccination requirement should become popular in Asia, according to comments cited by Reuters. “I predict that in Asia in any case, I think they won’t let anyone in without vaccination,” Fernandes said.
Qantas CEO Alan Joyce said vaccination against Covid-19 would be a requirement for boarding the Australian carrier’s international flights.
The CEO of Air Asia argues that the responsibility should rather lie with the countries. “It’s not for the airlines to decide. It is for governments to decide. It will be the country that decides whether it will allow people to enter if they are not vaccinated, ”Fernandes said.
While the vaccines are pending wider roll-out, airlines have advocated pre-flight testing and travel bubbles as an alternative to quarantines that hamper travel.
Additionally, carriers including Air Asia have unveiled digital passes to streamline health document checks and determine eligibility to travel within a country. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is also in the final stages of developing an industry standard health pass to support the safe reopening of borders.
Compulsory vaccination as a prerequisite for travel seems dangerous in the current state of affairs when the first messenger RNA vaccines have just arrived on the market. Laboratories must prove that this new technology is not without risk in the medium term. Many other vaccines using more traditional technologies are in development and are due to be released to the market next year.
It seems illusory to believe that travel will restart with compulsory vaccination. The industry should instead focus on pre-flight testing in our humble opinion …
