As his family says in a statement, Bill Withers († 81) died of heart problems. «We are devastated by the loss of our loving husband and father. His poetry and music brought the world together. He always spoke honestly and connected people with each other, “quotes” The Guardian “from the letter. Withers is survived by his wife Marcia Johnson, son Todd and daughter Kori.

The singer celebrated his breakthrough in 1971 with the single “Ain’t No Sunshine”. Afterwards he wrote further hits like “Lean On Me”, “Use Me” or “Lovely Day”. Withers won three Grammys in total and was inducted into the “Rock and Roll Hall of Fame” in 2015.

Career ended in 1985
The singer gave up his music career in 1985, however, after his album “Watching You Watching Me” flopped. Withers felt unfairly treated by his record label. In contrast to many of his music colleagues, he never changed his decision and remained in early retirement until his death. (klm)
