AIK Celebrates 100th Allsvenskan Season – A Look Back at Club History and Premier Match Results

The Allsvenskan started in the late summer of 1924 and is being played this year for the hundredth time. AIK was together with Gais, IFK Gothenburg, Örgryte IS, Hälsingborgs IF, Landskrona BoIS, IK Sleipner, IFK Norrköping, IFK Eskilstuna, IFK Malmö, Västerås IK and Hammarby IF in the first edition. AIK won its first Allsvenskan premier on 3 August 1924 with 5–1 after overturning a 0–1 deficit at halftime at home in Stockholm’s stadium against Västerås IK. Gais became the first Allsvenskan series winners and AIK finished fifth. Under the relegation line, Västerås IK ended up eleventh and Hammarby IF twelve.

AIK left the Allsvenskan for the first time in the spring of 1951 and they have also been out of the top league in 1962, 1980 and 2005. On all four occasions, the stay outside the Allsvenskan has only been one year and the comeback immediate. AIK is thus the club that has played the most Allsvenskan seasons and when the kick-off at Friends Arena kicks off at 16:30 on Monday, it will be the 96th time that AIK has started an Allsvenskan season. IFK Göteborg has had the second most seasons in the Allsvenskan with its 92 seasons, followed by Malmö FF (89), IFK Norrköping (84) and IF Elfsborg (81).

AIK has recorded 44W-26O-25F in its 95 Allsvenskan premierships played so far.

The biggest Allsvenskan premiership victory to date was recorded by AIK at home at the Stockholm stadium against Stattena IF on August 4, 1929, when the final score was 6–0. The biggest Allsvenskan premiership loss was recorded by AIK at home at Råsunda football stadium on August 2, 1957 when they fell 0–5 against IFK Norrköping.

How important is the result in the premiere for the rest of the season? AIK has won six SC golds (1931/1932, 1936/1937, 1992, 1998, 2009 and 2018) since the start of the Allsvenskan in 1924 and recorded 5W-1O-0F in the premieres of the gold-winning years. In the premier round of Allsvenskan 1950/1951, 1961, 1979 and 2004 when AIK was relegated, 1W-1O-2F was recorded.
