“AIDAprima Celebrates its Seventh Anniversary: A Look Back at the First Ship of the Hyperion Class”

AIDAprima is celebrating its seventh birthday today

Exactly seven years ago to the day, a cruise ship was solemnly christened in his name in the Hanseatic city of Hamburg. This ship is the AIDAprima of the Rostock shipping company AIDA Cruises, the first ship of the Hyperion class.

After seven ships of a construction class, the Sphinx class, were manufactured in Papenburg in relation to the new AIDA ships, AIDA Cruises decided to order a new generation of ships and not have them manufactured by the Meyer shipyard. The shipping company thus ordered two cruise ships from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Nagasaki (Japan).

AIDA’s new course not only affected the site of construction itself, but with the AIDAprima, a cruise ship was designed for AIDA Cruises for the first time in the sense of better multi-generational capability.

However, there was a construction delay of one year before it was put into service, but on May 7th, 2016 the new kissing mouth ship could finally be christened in Hamburg. The naming ceremony was combined with the 827th port birthday in Hamburg. The then 13-year-old Emma Schweiger (daughter of the actor Till Schweiger) acted as godmother.

A year later and with a construction delay of one year, the AIDAperla, the identically constructed sister of AIDAprima, followed. After the production of this ship, the series of the Hyperion class was completed and the orders for the following newbuildings went back to the Papenburg Meyer shipyard (Helios class).

The AIDAprima is spending its birthday today at sea between Hamburg and Bergen. Yesterday, the ship was also one of the cruise ship visitors at the 834th Hamburg Port Birthday, but unlike in previous years, no AIDA ship was positioned for the fireworks and light show on the Elbe. The AIDAprima left the port of Hamburg at around 6:30 p.m.

In the current summer season, the kissing-mouth ship AIDAprima is stationed in Hamburg and alternately runs trips on the metropolitan route and to Norway. On November 8, 2023, the trans-voyage to the 2023/2024 winter travel region, the Orient, will start.
