Aid organizations – Freiburg im Breisgau – Caritas warns of famine in Afghanistan – Panorama

Freiburg (dpa) – According to the aid organization Caritas, a famine is threatened in Afghanistan this winter because of the corona pandemic. “The frequent weather extremes such as droughts and floods in recent years and the still tense security situation prevent people from being able to make a living from cultivating their fields,” said Vera Jeschke, Country Officer at Caritas Germany and responsible for the work of the aid agency in Afghanistan on Saturday in Freiburg.

The number of people infected with the coronavirus in Afghanistan is increasing continuously. As early as July, experts estimated that almost a third of the population – around 10 million people – are infected.

In the coming week, the international community will meet virtually for a two-day donor conference to raise money for Afghanistan. “The international community must use the funds sensibly and in a peaceful manner if Afghanistan is to have a real future,” demanded Peter Neher, President of the German Caritas Association. At the donor conference in Brussels four years ago, states pledged $ 15.2 billion.
