Ai Weiwei’s breathtaking film about the protest in Hong Kong

A man is standing on scaffolding at a great height. He has posted a protest poster there: “No extradition to China”, no extradition to China. It’s dark, maybe already night, on the other side of the street young people are shouting: “Come down there, don’t die.” What happens then makes you scream.

This is the first scene from the must-see documentary “Cockroach” by the Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei about the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong. The spectacular shots in it are from 2019.
