Jakarta –
Technology AI or artificial intelligence, has recently played an increasingly important role in the military world. The United States, United Kingdom and Australia have just announced plans to trial the use of AI for tracking Chinese submarines in the Pacific Ocean.
Speaking at a meeting in Mountain View, California, the respective countries’ defense leaders announced the plans in the Aukus alliance, a security agreement formed in 2021 to ‘help maintain peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region’.
One of the things announced was the use of advanced AI technology in patrol aircraft, including the US P-8A Poseidon aircraft. AI will process information from underwater detection devices used by each country.
Data processed by AI allows the three countries to track Chinese submarines more quickly and accurately. “This joint advancement will enable timely exploitation of large amounts of data, thereby enhancing our anti-submarine warfare capabilities,” they said in a joint statement.
Apart from AI, the three countries will also collaborate on other technologies such as quantum technology, electronic warfare and hypersonic weapons. Australia’s Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles said China’s increasing aggression had increased the need for this kind of collaboration.
Several weeks ago, a team of Australian Navy divers were injured by a Chinese warship’s sonar weapons technology, even though their presence was known to the ship’s crew. “This was an unsafe and unprofessional act,” Marles said of the incident.
“Australia expects all countries, including China, to operate their militaries professionally and safely,” he was quoted as saying detikINET from Insider, Sunday (3/12/2023)
The Pentagon’s recent China Military Power Report raised significant concerns about such operational incidents or miscalculations, which could escalate into a crisis or conflict.
