Earlier this month, Sony AI and Polyphony Digital jointly announced ‘Gran Turismo Sophy’. This is a super human AI system that should provide very realistic and human AI performance. More details about the AI project can be found here read again. At the unveiling of GT Sophy it was still unclear whether the system would also be used in Gran Turismo 7, the next part in the series that will be released next week.
In the meantime, an interview from GTPlanet with Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi more clarity on this. It turns out that Gran Turismo Sophy will be added to Gran Turismo 7 through a future update. When we can expect that update is still unclear, but Yamauchi gave more details in the interview about what the arrival of GT Sophy could mean for the game.
Yamauchi explained that GT Sophy can be used in three ways. The AI system can teach players how to drive, it can learn from the players when it comes to sportsmanship and it can act as a “friend” for players to race together. Finally, GT Sophy may also open the door to a return of the B-Spec mode. This mode was included in some previous Gran Turismo games and allowed players to instruct a computer-controlled driver before racing. In the case of Gran Turismo 7, GT Sophy would then be the driver to be instructed by players.
“Sophy will probably appear in front of the player in three forms. As a teacher that will teach driving to players, a student that will learn sportsmanship from players, and as a friend to race with. I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of a B-Spec mode, where the player is the race director and Sophy is the driver.”
So it remains to be seen whether Gran Turismo 7 will indeed get a B-Spec mode, but that GT Sophy will be added to the game in whatever form, it is now certain. Gran Turismo 7 will be released on March 4 for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
