“AI Pioneer Geoffrey Hinton Warns AI Could Be a More Urgent Threat to Humanity than Climate Change”

Geoffrey Hinton, a pioneer in the field of artificial intelligence, recently spoke to Reuters about the potential threat posed by AI to humanity. According to Hinton, AI could be a “more urgent” risk than climate change. Hinton co-authored a landmark paper on neural networks in 1986 and was awarded the Turing Award in 2018 for his research breakthroughs in the field of AI. Despite concerns about the existential threat posed by AI, Hinton disagrees with calls for a halt on research, stating that resources should instead be directed towards developing solutions. The European Union has also responded to concerns about AI, proposing measures to force companies to disclose any copyright material used to train their models. At the White House, President Biden held talks with several AI company leaders, including Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, pledging to promote transparency in the technology sector. Hinton emphasizes the need for both tech leaders and politicians to work together to address the risks of AI.
