AI in the Workplace: Disruptive Potential for Gen Z | OnlineMarketing.de

Managers in Germany are looking forward to the integration of generative artificial intelligence in their everyday work, according to a recent survey by LinkedIn. But Gen Z is worried.

Die Studie „Future of Work: AI at Work“, which was carried out by the career platform LinkedIn shows that the world of work is already changing due to artificial intelligence and that companies worldwide are increasingly relying on AI capabilities. More than 1,000 managers from six European countries were surveyed, with 82 percent of European managers expecting their employees to benefit from generative AI in the long term. Managers from Germany are at the top of the list of optimists with an impressive 93 percent, followed by Great Britain (81 percent) and France (80 percent).

Expectations from generative AI: automation and more room for creativity

The managers surveyed primarily focus on relieving their employees of boring tasks (60 percent), increasing productivity (53 percent) and creating space for complex, creative work (50 percent). In addition, 38 percent expect that advances in generative AI will create completely new areas of responsibility in their organizations.

Barbara WittmannCountry Manager at LinkedIn DACH, comments on the study as follows:

Artificial intelligence has the potential to positively change the way we work. AI is already changing jobs, companies and entire industries. When the monotonous or boring day-to-day activities are removed, teams can focus more on the strategic, creative and people-focused aspects of their work that are more fun for them and provide greater value to their company. Therefore, managers should now consider what further training their employees need in order to develop a basic understanding of AI on the one hand and to further develop their soft skills on the other.

AI is shaping the world of work

The study highlights that companies worldwide have recognized the importance of artificial intelligence. Globally, the number of Head of AI positions on LinkedIn has tripled in the past five years. In Germany, the number of AI-related job advertisements has more than doubled in the past two years.

The LinkedIn data shows that although Germany is well equipped with AI specialists, the spread of AI skills in the country is progressing comparatively slowly. Despite the global increase in AI capabilities tenfold since 2016, the value in Germany has only increased approximately fivefold.

In addition to the growing importance of AI skills, employers and employees emphasize the increasing importance of soft skills. In Germany, problem-solving skills (53 percent), adaptability (50 percent) and communication skills (46 percent) are viewed as crucial skills for the future.

The study results make it clear that the integration of AI has different effects on different generations of employees, with Generation Z in particular seeing certain tasks in their jobs affected by AI. According to LinkedIn, this is because many of the skills used by generative AI technologies, such as administrative tasks or research, are often tasks of professionals in the early stages of their careers and are therefore eliminated.

According to LinkedIn, employees from Generation Z are best prepared for AI as digital natives. Their affinity for technology and ability to adapt quickly are likely to offset many challenges. AI will increase their productivity and reduce the time spent on administrative tasks, leaving more room for career-boosting tasks. What is striking is that the people surveyed tend to see greater potential for improvements through the integration of AI into their work and perceive less disruption as they get older.

Preparation for AI in everyday work

The career platform LinkedIn gives three concrete recommendations for dealing with AI in the company:

  1. Motivating and qualifying employees by enabling them to take part in AI courses
  2. Investing in a learning culture that promotes employees’ technical knowledge and soft skills equally.
  3. Targeted implementation of AI tools in company processes

The targeted preparation of companies and employees for the potential of artificial intelligence enables successful digital transformation in the workplace. Despite the growing influence of AI, the challenge remains to accelerate the spread of AI capabilities in Germany.
