AI Generates Popular Song but Violates Copyright: “Heart on My Sleeve” Removed from Streaming Platforms

Artificial intelligence (AI) is capable of generating fake content of increasing credibility, and sometimes even great efforts are required to distinguish lies from truth. We already wrote about the AI-generated interview with F1 legend Michael Schumacher, which was nothing but lies from start to finish. Another recent case demonstrates the great capabilities of AI in rendering musicians. In particular, the joint song “Heart on My Sleeve” by musicians Drake and The Weeknd was generated, which managed to gain wide popularity.

“Heart on My Sleeve” has already been removed by music streaming platforms due to Universal Music Group (UMG) copyright concerns. UMG has stated that the song violates copyright law because it was created by AI tools associated with other copyright violations.

The song allegedly created by Drake and The Weeknd became quite popular, collecting several million listens. It was added on the platforms by a profile with the nickname Ghostwriter 877. He did not leave any clues as to how the song was created or what information was fed into the AI programs to create it. Also, the names of Drake and the Weeknd did not appear in the description of “Heart on My Sleeve”, so you can determine the artist by the voices.

“Heart on My Sleeve” was pulled from the charts on Monday by Apple Music, Deezer and Tidal at UMG’s request. Then also Spotify, TikTok and YouTube. When opening the link to the original version of the song on YouTube, information appears that it is no longer available due to a copyright infringement claim by Universal Music Group.
