Liputan6.com, Jakarta – AI (artificial intelligence) has helped the discovery and study of asteroids. Not only that, AI also has the potential to help protect Earth from asteroids.
Collect HT TechMonday (9/10/2023), a study from the University of Washington revealed that an algorithm called HelioLinc3D helped researchers find dangerous asteroids.
NASA has also revealed that an asteroid is now estimated to be at its closest distance to Earth. The asteroid is named Asteroid 2023 TL.
To date, 1,298,148 asteroids have been discovered, and Asteroid 2023 TL is one of them. NASA’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) has stated that this asteroid will be at its closest distance to Earth on October 9, 2023.
During its approach, this asteroid will be at a distance of 3.1 million kilometers from Earth. And hurtling towards Earth at an incredible speed, namely 50,124 kilometers per hour.
NASA believes that this asteroid is not large enough to be classified as a Potentially Hazardous Object. A celestial body must be about 492 feet wide and pass Earth at a distance of less than 7.5 million kilometers to fall into that category.
On the other hand, Asteroid 2023 TL is only barely 140 feet wide. Thus it can be estimated that the size is the same as an airplane.
The Apollo group asteroid 2023 TL is a space rock that crosses the Earth with a semi-major axis larger than the Earth.
The name of this asteroid is taken from the name of the Apollo 1862 asteroid discovered by German astronomer Karl Reinmuth in the 1930s.
And the approach of Asteroid 2023 TL will be the first approach to Earth in history. However, NASA has predicted that this asteroid will not pass Earth anytime soon.
