Artificial intelligence (AI) can help scientists predict which viruses are more likely to make the jump to humans.

Nationalgeographic.co.id—Researchers from the University of Glasgow used a new approach to predict the likelihood of transmitting animal viruses to humans. The study shows that artificial intelligence (AI) using viral genomes can predict any virus that infects animals will infect humans.
As is well known, most of the infectious diseases that arise in humans (such as COVID-19) is zoonosis, namely diseases caused by viruses originating from other animal species. Identifying high-risk viruses early can increase research and surveillance priorities in the future.
That’s why researchers from the University of Glasgow developed AI to predict this possibility. Researchers used viral sequence features and the human genome to develop a model machine learning to predict the possibility that animal viruses might jump to humans. Details of the research have been published in the journal PLOS Biology on September 28, 2021.
