Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Artificial intelligence (AI) technology has once again showcased its ability to ‘beat’ humans. According to recent reports, AI algorithms are able to detect killer asteroids flying past Earth.
The AI algorithm named ‘HelioLinc3D’ was actually created for the Vera Rubin Observatory facility in Northern Chile. Then, the algorithm identified dangerous asteroids that missed the identification of the human eye, it was reported New York Times, Wednesday (9/8/2023).
The asteroid, named 2022 SF289, is approximately 600 feet across and is predicted to reach Earth at a distance of 140,000 miles. As an illustration, that distance is about half the distance from Earth to the Moon.
The size of this asteroid is actually relatively small, making it difficult for the human eye to identify it. However, the impact is said to be able to destroy an entire city or country if it hits Earth.
The good news, this asteroid will not reach Earth in the near future. However, the fact that AI was able to detect it after the NASA team missed it, is an extraordinary achievement.
Moreover, the Rubin Observatory facility is actually not fully operational. Later, according to reports Timesthis facility will photograph the sky conditions every 3 nights.
With the algorithm that accompanies it, the camera can collect a lot of sky data that is useful for human knowledge.
“By demonstrating world conditions via software at Rubin, we can detect thousands of dangerous asteroids,” said University of Washington researcher Ari Henze, quoted from Futurism.
“The discovery of 2022 SF289 will keep us all safe,” he concluded.
