Ahn Cheol-soo Completes Chuncheon Marathon, Overcomes ‘Health Controversy’

“A marathon is like life. Because we don’t know what will happen during the long journey ahead. “Winning the battle with yourself is the most important thing in a marathon.”

People Power Party lawmaker Ahn Cheol-soo (61) completed the full course (42.195km) of the Chuncheon Marathon (co-hosted by Chosun Ilbo, Sports Chosun, and Korea Athletics Federation). It has also put to rest the ‘health controversy’ such as heart problems that was recently raised by some. Rep. Ahn has crossed the finish line of the full course three times in overseas competitions, including in Germany and New York, USA, but this is his first time completing the full course in a domestic competition.

Representative Ahn participated in the full course of the Chuncheon Marathon held in Chuncheon, Gangwon-do on the 29th and finished with a time of 4 hours, 33 minutes and 04 seconds. He ran the Seoul Half Marathon (21.0975km) last April with a time of 1 hour, 58 minutes and 21 seconds. “I had just returned from an overseas government inspection by the Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee, so I set my pace to exactly 4 hours and 30 minutes and ran,” he said. The New York Marathon is run among old castles, and the New York Marathon is run within the city. On the other hand, the Chuncheon Marathon is nature-friendly (with spectacular views of Uiam Lake and fall foliage, etc.). “It’s the best course I’ve ever played,” he said.

Rep. Ahn, who started running in earnest following his daughter Seol-hee (34) in August 2016, woke up at dawn two to three times a week for two months ago and ran 20 km through Tancheon, Seongnam, Gyeonggi-do, in preparation for the Chuncheon Marathon. He laughed and said, “I was able to meet a lot of residents,” and “There were people who raised their complaints every time.” Rep. Ahn ran the full course that day and shook hands with other runners several times. He said, “It’s good that there are people who recognize me and approach me,” and “I don’t feel pressured at all.”

Rep. Ahn pointed out that the marathon is an exercise that can prove both mental strength and physical strength in a short period of time. He said, “Politicians who are paid with the people’s tax money have a duty to take good care of their physical and mental strength,” and added, “Personally, I hope I can bring two or three more fellow lawmakers next year. “I think competing in a marathon (rather than politics) would be fun in its own way,” he said. He went on to emphasize, “I haven’t been able to sleep since I ran the marathon.”

On this day, Rep. Ahn’s wife, Kim Mi-kyung (60), a professor at Seoul National University, also completed the full course (5 hours, 35 minutes, 05 seconds). Rep. Ahn said, “If possible, I want to run a marathon until I’m 80,” and added, “I will try to shorten my record next year.”
