Anel Ahmedhodžić returns for the first time to his altercation with Benoît Costil against Montpellier. Present at a press conference this Friday, two days before the trip to Lyon (32nd day of Ligue 1, Sunday at 5:05 p.m.), the central defender of the Girondins spoke about the virulent exchange he had with the goalkeeper of goal during the match against MHSC (29th day of Ligue 1, March 20).
“What happened on the lawn between Benoît and me happens, said the Bosnian international. I don’t speak French very well, Benoît not very good English. But it often happens in matches. After what happened in the stands, I didn’t really understand. This kind of moment happens all the time, in all teams. Football is very emotional. If you don’t play with emotions , football is not for you.
Accusation of racism by the Ultramarines
Following this altercation, Costil had drawn the wrath of the Ultramarines. The supporters’ association had accused the goalkeeper of having made racist remarks, before returning to the charge by speaking of an incident of “primary importance”. Costil, for his part, had decided to file a complaint for defamation.
On April 6, Costil spoke on his Instagram account. “Malicious individuals believed they could undermine my honor and my reputation, by publicly peddling false information, accusing me of having had so-called racist remarks and behavior within the workforce. I dispute with the greatest strength and the greatest firmness these false accusations which correspond neither to my values nor to my education”, defended the French goalkeeper. Since this incident, he has not played again in the jersey of the Girondins. He is out of contract at the end of the season.
