On May 3, 1791, the Great Sejm, convened in October 1788, adopted the Constitution of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. It was the first constitution in modern Europe and the second – after the American one – in the world. The Constitution of May 3 transformed the state into a constitutional monarchy and introduced the principle of separation of powers. The bicameral Sejm was to be the expression of the sovereign will of the nation. Just two days after the adoption of the Constitution, May 3 was recognized as a national holiday, which was later suspended for a long time due to the country’s captivity. The holiday of May 3 was restored in the Second Polish Republic in April 1919. Outlawed by the German and Soviet occupiers during World War II, it was also banned in the Polish People’s Republic. Since 1990, May 3 has once again been an official national holiday for Poles.

On May 8, 1945, the act of unconditional surrender of the Third Reich was signed. This ended the most tragic war in the history of the world. In Moscow, due to the two-hour time difference, it was already May 9. This means that there are two official dates for this event – May 8 in Western countries and May 9 in Russia, and earlier in the USSR and the Soviet bloc countries. Polish historians differ in their assessment of the importance of May 8, 1945 for Europe and our country. According to some researchers, the end of the war in Europe meant, above all, victory over Nazism and saving the Polish nation from biological destruction. For others, May 8 is the day of defeat for the nations of Eastern Europe, brought under Soviet rule by the Western Allies.
