Ahead of the second action to defend the Constitutional Court’s decision, the Indonesian KPU building is fenced off with spiked concrete and guarded by dozens of officers

The entire road is also closed. At every street corner several police officers stood guard. Meanwhile, dozens of others were preparing opposite the KPK building.

On the road, vehicles from the Mobile Brigade Corps and Polda Metro Jaya, including buses, trucks and anti-riot cars, were also monitored. Police motorcycles were neatly parked opposite the KPU building. The show masses have not been seen coming so far.

At the same time, the Labor Party, which was going to act, canceled its plans. The Chairman of the Labor Party, Said Iqbal, said that the cancellation was made after the DPR Baleg claimed that he would not give him a review of the provincial election law. “Because of this, we are canceling the action of August 23 at the DPR RI,” said Said Iqbal in his statement, Friday August 23, 2024.

The Labor Party decided to monitor developments in the situation first. Protests will be held again if the KPU does not revise the KPU Regulations in accordance with two Constitutional Court decisions. “While we are looking at the dynamic developments in the DPR RI,” said Said.

The Labor Party is one of the petitioners in the request for a judicial review of the Regional Election Law regarding the lowering of the threshold for the nomination of regional leaders. The Constitutional Court granted the request in a decision that was read out on Tuesday, August 20 2024.

The demonstration emerged after an attempt by the DPR was said to overturn MK’s decision. Attempts to cancel the decision of the Constitutional Court were made through the agenda of the Legislative Body of DPR or the meeting of Baleg. The demonstration began on Thursday, August 22, 2024, in which several elements of society were present, from students to civil coalitions.
