Prime Minister English Boris Johnson warns its citizens to be more careful, ahead of the easing of restrictions Covid-19.
The announcement to lift almost all of the restrictions is planned to be delivered Monday (12/7) local time.
The new rules will take effect from July 19, in the form of lifting the wearing of masks, social contact and working from home.
“The global pandemic is not over yet,” he said in an official statement released Sunday (11/7) evening.
“Cases will increase as we unveil it. So, when we confirm our plans today, our message will be clear. Caution is very important, and we all have to take responsibility so we don’t cancel this progress,” Johnson said, quote Reuters.
Ahead of the lifting of the rule, the last few days Covid-19 cases in the UK soared.
Despite the spike in cases, the government claims deaths and hospitalizations are much lower than before. This is seen as evidence that vaccines can save lives. That means the restrictions can begin to be lifted.
The rules for removing masks depend on meeting four categories: enough people are vaccinated, vaccines reduce hospitalizations and deaths, hospitals are free from stress and variants that pose too great a risk.
However, health experts continue to warn that the government should be more careful in implementing new rules to reduce the rate of transmission.
“I know the government is desperate to get people back into work but I think over the next four to six weeks it needs to be implemented very carefully to keep transmission at bay,” said Professor Susan Hopkins of Public Health England.
