Ahead of G7, Zelensky Asks for Air Defense Systems

Kiev

President Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky call for an anti-aircraft defense system and more tougher sanctions for Russia when speaking in front of the leader G7 countries who are holding a summit in Germany.

As reported Reuters, Monday (27/6/2022), the call was delivered when Zelensky gave a speech via video link at the G7 meeting held in the Bavarian Alps, Germany, this week. In his speech, Zelensky reportedly also asked for security guarantees from Western countries for Ukraine which Russia continues to invade.

“Partners need to move faster if they are really partners, not observers. Delays in arms transfers to our country, any restrictions — this is actually an invitation for Russia to strike again and again,” Zelensky said in his speech.

In his speech, according to a European official who asked not to be named, Zelensky also asked for help exporting grain from Ukraine and for aid in the reconstruction of his country which was devastated by Moscow.

The G7 meeting in Germany was dominated by the war in Ukraine, and its impact on food and energy supplies, as well as the global economy.

At the beginning of the meeting, four of the G7 member countries took steps to ban Russian gold imports to tighten sanctions against Moscow and cut off funding for the invasion of Ukraine. It is not clear whether there is a consensus for the plan.

The sanctions have effectively cut Russia off from the global financial system, although with exports restricted, Moscow has also created difficulties for other countries far from the country’s borders.
