Aguilera’s lawyer announced that they will appeal the sentence: “We are convinced of his innocence”

This Tuesday the foundations of the verdict of the corruption trial in which former governor Sergio Urribarri was sentenced in the first instance to eight years in prison were announced.

Marcos Rodríguez Allende, lawyer for Juan Pablo Aguilera -brother-in-law of the former president, sentenced to six and a half years- and Luciana Almada -two and a half years- gave an account of the steps that he will follow once the arguments of the Court of Trial and Appeals are known from Parana.

“We are going to be able to count in detail on each of the positions. It was a long trial, with several files and a lot of evidence. Starting tomorrow, each defendant, hand in hand with his lawyer, has 20 days to present an appeal for Cassation. filed in writing, it is submitted to the Cassation Chamber, which will set a hearing to present the arguments,” said Rodríguez Allende.

The lawyer announced that, in the particular case of his two clients, he will present the aforementioned appeal: “I have many observations. I have been firm and punctual with the evidence. The court has made another type of assessment, but surely throughout the appeal I will go observing the ruling and ultimately it will be the Chamber that resolves the issues”.

To close, the lawyer stressed: “Aguilera and Almada are convinced of his innocence. I am also convinced. In his case we will use all available procedural tools.”

It should be noted that, shortly after the ruling in the first instance, the lawyers Raúl Barrandeguy and Candelario Pérez, who defend Urribarri, announced that they were going to appeal the sentence. “We expected a deeper and more balanced treatment. We will present an appeal,” Barradeguy said. For his part, Pérez stressed: “There is an inconsistency between the evidence that is evaluated, the null evidence that was taken as valid. There was no reasonable ruling, it is arbitrary to take null evidence to convict.”
