The state of Aguascalientes, in the Mexican Bajío region, reported this Saturday that it will suspend the distribution of textbooks for primary education until the Ministry of Public Education (SEP) resolves various amparo lawsuits.

“We announce that the free textbooks will not be distributed, while the competent authorities pronounce themselves before the different amparo lawsuits that citizens and non-governmental organizations have promoted,” said the governor, María Teresa Jiménez.

In her social networks, the governor from the conservative National Action Party (PAN) added that while this legal conflict is resolved, “a great agreement” will be promoted, with children in the Mexican entity.

“From the local we endorse the commitment to maintain the educational quality that has distinguished us,” he said.

With this decision, Aguascalientes joins opposition entities such as Jalisco, Guanajuato, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León and Querétaro, being the sixth state to stop the delivery of mandatory textbooks in the first six years of basic education in Mexico.

However, the SEP has maintained that it maintains dialogue with all state agencies and has ensured that the next 2023-24 school year will begin without setbacks and with all educational materials.

All this, in the midst of the controversy generated by free textbooks due to errors, described by the Mexican educational authorities as “opportunity areas”, as well as early education on sexual and reproductive diversity, diverse families and alleged ideological charges. .

While a minister of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) decided to suspend its distribution by admitting a constitutional controversy in the northern state of Chihuahua, which occurs after suspensions given by judges to organizations, such as the National Union of Parents of Family or the Human Rights Clinic.

According to the SEP, 100 million books have been printed and distributed to regional stores, to later be delivered to the more than 95,000 primary schools in the country, with a student demand of more than 24 million Mexican children. according to official figures.
