Agropoli, the algae return and the controversy explodes again

They are back, like all anin. They invaded the beaches, alarming tourist operators. Remove the algae (posidonia) will cost the Municipality a lot of funds. The president of the Camelot association, the lawyer Giovanni Basile, asks the mayor for a definitive solution: «Saving algae and then disposing of them costs the taxpayers of Agropoli too much. The problem must be solved by trying to create a virtuous circle. A solution could be to use this material for cosmetic use”.

Perplexed he seems Raffaele Pesceopposition municipal councilor, for the choices made so far: «What is the vision, the perspective for the future? You have to live with posidonia, there is little you can do, since the plant (not algae) is an indication of a clean sea. Continuing to collect, accumulate and, after some time, sink dried stranded seagrass and sand, since the screening takes its time, is certainly not the solution».

The councilor for the sea, port, state property and heritage enters into the details of the project carried out so far, Giuseppe Di Filippo: «The intervention is characterized by many complexities, in particular the interpretation of the specific procedure dictated by the salvamare law. We have decided to address the problem of plant biomass by releasing it back into the sea following a screening process in order to separate the biomass from the sand and any waste. Destining the seagrass to be sunk back into the sea (therefore returned to its ecosystem), the sand to be nourished on the beach and other materials to the integrated waste cycle. We hope that the conclusion of the marine biomasses management operation can be concluded for all the beaches by the beginning of June, so we will give back the seaweed to the sea and the beach to the people of Agropoli and to the many tourists who choose our city».
