Colombia was the leading country in Latin America at the World Economic Forum, in Davos, Switzerland, a meeting that culminated the working visit of President Iván Duque to the United Kingdom, Turkey and Switzerland, where investment commitments and new levels in bilateral relations.
In a statement, the Presidency of the Republic highlighted that during the visit, the president held meetings with the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson; Prince William, Duke of Cambridge; the presidents of Turkey, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Israel and Rwanda; and the Prime Minister of Luxembourg, among other world leaders, businessmen and investors.
Two concrete actions in this sense were those of Turkey, which raised the bilateral relationship with Colombia to the level of ‘strategic ally’, confirming the interest of business sectors in increasing investments in the country, and making investments for more than US$200 million. In addition, the Free Trade Agreement with the United Kingdom was formalized, after the so-called Brexit, or its departure from the European Union.

“I think that the general balance of this entire process has been, first, to continue advancing in the investment of the United Kingdom in our country. There was a very specific message, that there were already more than US$400 million of investment that will materialize very soon”, declared Duque.
Regarding the working visit to Davos, the president affirmed that the result is the strengthening of ties with other governments, and the interest of many of the companies that have participated, in materializing investments in renewable energies, in the hotel sector, the metalworking and concessions.
“And I also believe that Colombia positioned itself on the issues of biodivercities, on the issues of the fourth industrial revolution, and also broke into the conversation on green finance in a very important way, through carbon credits with Green Taxonomy, where we are practically the regional leaders”; she stated.
Today, one of Duque’s final meetings was with the founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates, who highlighted Colombia’s leadership in developing the agenda for environmental care and the fight against the climate crisis.
“The head of state spoke with Gates about the country’s positive results in terms of technology and environmental protection. For example, the tycoon verified on the map of the country, the progress in the Energy Transition, and the growth by a hundred times more in non-conventional renewable energies that was achieved in Colombia in the last four years”, reads the text.
