The European Commission and five eastern member states have reached an agreement on the import of Ukrainian grain to the European Union. In Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Bulgaria and Romania, the Ukrainian grain caused grumbling among farmers.
Due to the war, Ukrainian food is transported less by sea and more by road through neighboring countries. This led to problems: the cheap Ukrainian grain ended up on the market in neighboring countries. Local farmers weren’t happy about that, because they can’t compete with it.
Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and Bulgaria therefore decided to ban its import. This led to bickering within the EU, because this is against the rules. Only the European Commission is allowed to impose such bans. Romania did this on Wednesday in consultation with Brussels.
So now an agreement has been reached to appease tempers. According to EU sources, this means that the products may only enter neighboring countries if they are destined for elsewhere in the EU. The grain must therefore not stick to neighboring countries.
In return, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and Bulgaria pledge to scrap the measures they had taken on their own. Furthermore, farmers who have suffered economic damage can turn to the EU for compensation.
