Agrar – Freiburg im Breisgau – Klein new managing director at the Baden Winegrowing Association – Economy

Freiburg (dpa / lsw) – Holger Klein takes over the management of the Badischer Weinbauverband in Freiburg. At the beginning of the year, the 43-year-old replaces Peter Wohlfarth, who has been at the head of the association since 2006. Until now, Klein was Wohlfarth’s deputy. Baden is an important growing area in Germany. In terms of the area under vines, it is in third place behind Rheinhessen and the Palatinate.

According to his own admission, Klein wants to expand the umbrella brand “Baden – the garden of Germany”. The association announced in the summer that it would break away from the decades-old advertising slogan “Pampered by the sun”. Another goal is to raise the profile of the protected designation of origin “Baden”, Klein told the German press agency. All quality wines that bear this designation must meet certain standards.

“I would like to develop a sustainability strategy for Baden,” added the business graduate for the wine industry. The growing area has good prerequisites for this, as there are often still small structures in the industry. In essence, it is about taking ecology, economy and social issues equally into account.

The cultivation area is over 400 kilometers long and extends from Tauberfranken in the north over the Ortenau, the Kaiserstuhl and the Markgräflerland to Lake Constance. Important grape varieties are Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Müller-Thurgau.
