Agrar – Freiburg im Breisgau – concerns of winegrowers focus on labor – economy

Freiburg / Weinsberg (dpa / lsw) – Whether the 2020 vintage will be good in the southwest depends on many factors. Is late frost coming, is there the right amount of sun and rain? The worries of the winegrowers are currently very much focused on the question of whether sufficient helpers will be available. The hanging of ampoules with an attractant for biological pest control in March still worked well with the help of schoolchildren and students, said the managing director of the Badischer Weinbauverband, Holger Klein.

Now the next work is coming up in the vineyards, such as the breaking out of the main shoots. “This will be critical for the companies,” said the President of the Winery Association Württemberg, Hermann Hohl.

According to information from Hohl and Klein, enough workers from Eastern Europe usually come to Baden-Württemberg to do the work in the vineyards. Because of the corona virus pandemic, everything will be more difficult this year. “There could be a shortage,” said Klein. “It’s our turn.” The winemakers in Baden-Württemberg would need several thousand helpers. During the harvest, the demand rose to more than 20,000 workers, said Hohl. “This poses great challenges for us.”

So far, frost has not been a major issue this spring. There were some light night frosts in the wine-growing regions of Baden and Württemberg, but they hardly caused any damage.
