Agractie is going to call nitrogen broker Remkes

Farmers’ action group Agractie leaves the door ajar for consultation with nitrogen mediator Johan Remkes. The organization wants to call Remkes on Monday, foreman Bart Kemp confirms after reporting from the AD.

It is not a substantive consultation, but a discussion about Remkes’ invitation to sit down with farmers’ organizations, Kemp told the newspaper. “He has sent an invitation and he wants to know what I think about it.” Kemp tells AD that a conversation only makes sense if the cabinet lets go of the current nitrogen targets.

So far, Agractie has been reluctant in talks with VVD member Remkes. An earlier report by him served as the basis for the cabinet’s nitrogen plans.

On Thursday it became clear that farmers’ interest organization LTO would nevertheless accept Remkes’ invitation. The organization is prepared to have “an initial exploratory conversation” with him. That will happen next Friday. The more radical Farmers Defense Force (FDF), which has not yet accepted Remkes’ invitation, says it has not yet been approached for possible telephone consultations.

“Live stream not a good idea”

Today it also became clear that Remkes does not feel like broadcasting the conversation with the farmers via a live stream, as Farmers Defense Force had requested. “That is not conducive to the process,” his spokesperson told ANP news agency. Fifteen organizations were invited to the interview.

The choice of Remkes as a mediator is a sensitive issue for the agricultural sector. Remkes previously led the committee that criticized the government’s nitrogen policy as being insufficient. When it was announced that Remkes would take on the mediation, the protest organizations initially announced that they did not want to talk to him.
