Aging Population in Spain and the Importance of Adult Vaccination – Insights from the National Statistics Institute (INE)

Aging Population in Spain Reaches Record High, Raises Concerns about Healthcare System

According to the National Statistics Institute (INE), Spain is experiencing a significant increase in its aging population. In 2022, there were 133 people over the age of 64 for every 100 individuals under the age of 16. This represents the largest increase in recent years and raises concerns about the country’s healthcare system.

The aging population poses several challenges for Spain’s healthcare system. As people age, their immune systems deteriorate, making them more susceptible to diseases. This leads to an increase in healthcare costs and puts a strain on the National Health system. Additionally, vaccine-preventable diseases in adults continue to be a major cause of morbidity, mortality, disability, and social and health spending.

These issues were discussed during a meeting of the Innovation committee of the Institute for the Development and Integration of Health (IDIS Foundation). The meeting explored the present and future of vaccination in adults and included professionals from GSK, such as Sergio Ostale, Director of Market Access, Ana Hernando, Director of Government Affairs of Vaccines, and Dr. Isabel Abad, attached to the ASISA General Medical Directorate.

During the session, it was highlighted that the benefits of vaccination go beyond the prevention of acute diseases. Therapeutic vaccines, which stimulate the body’s immune system to fight diseases, are being researched and offer a treatment approach in the field of medicine.

Investing in adult immunization has the potential to generate a significant return on investment (ROI) in social and health care costs. Estimates suggest that the ROI can range from 40 percent to 300 percent.

One example discussed during the meeting was the impact of herpes zoster (HZ) and postherpetic neuralgia (NPH) in adults. Herpes zoster, also known as shingles, is a viral disease caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus. It can lead to postherpetic neuralgia, a painful and disabling condition that can last for months or even years. GSK has developed a vaccine to prevent herpes zoster and its consequences, including postherpetic neuralgia.

The experts at the meeting emphasized the need for a comprehensive vaccination calendar that covers people’s entire lives to prevent viruses and reduce their incidence. They also highlighted the importance of professional leadership in recommending vaccination for adults and called for private-public collaboration in vaccination campaigns. Additionally, equal access to vaccines financed in private centers at the territorial level was emphasized.

Angel of Benedict, the Secretary General of the IDIS Foundation, stated that integrating private healthcare into the vaccination system could provide a more complete picture of vaccination coverage in the country. It would also help coordinate and monitor the administration of vaccines more efficiently, avoiding duplications or gaps.

The increasing aging population in Spain is a pressing issue that requires proactive measures to ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of the healthcare system. Vaccination plays a crucial role in preventing diseases and reducing healthcare costs, making it a key focus for policymakers and healthcare professionals.

What strategies can be implemented to improve education, recommendation, and access to vaccines for adults in order to address the low vaccination rates among adults in Spain

Fight against chronic conditions, have the potential to significantly reduce healthcare costs and improve quality of life for the aging population.

The committee also discussed the importance of increasing awareness and access to vaccinations for adults. Currently, vaccination rates among adults in Spain are relatively low compared to other countries. This is partly due to a lack of knowledge and understanding about the benefits of vaccinations in adulthood.

To address these challenges, the committee proposed several strategies. Firstly, they emphasized the need for education campaigns to raise awareness about the importance of vaccinations for adults. This includes communicating the benefits of vaccines in preventing diseases and reducing healthcare costs.

Secondly, they highlighted the importance of healthcare professionals playing a proactive role in recommending and administering vaccines to adults. This includes integrating vaccination services into routine healthcare practices and providing training to healthcare professionals on best practices for adult vaccination.

Lastly, the committee stressed the need for improving access to vaccines for adults. This includes ensuring that vaccines are readily available in healthcare settings and implementing policies to reduce barriers to vaccination, such as cost or lack of transportation.

Overall, the increase in Spain’s aging population raises concerns about the sustainability of the healthcare system. However, through increased awareness, education, and access to vaccinations for adults, the country can better prepare for the healthcare needs of its aging population and improve health outcomes for all.
