Two weeks before the start of the new season in the National Basketball Association (NBA), Austria’s figurehead Jakob Pöltl is getting the finishing touches with his San Antonio Spurs. The 25-year-old will play a “more aggressive” role in 2020/21, as he said in a broadcast from his management. On the night of Sunday, the first of three preparatory games against Oklahoma City Thunder rises, they are “perhaps more important than ever,” said Pöltl.
Due to the shorter and changed preparation due to the Corona, the tests are of increased importance. “We have to use them as part of the training camp and develop as well as possible as a team until the start of the season,” said Pöltl, who first completed individual training, endurance and strength units before starting team training in early December.
“It’s a strange preparation for the season,” said Pöltl, describing the situation. “We were given time to get back inside. It is also noticeable that we should play more freely, similar to the bubble: not too many plays, more like basic principles, ”said the Viennese, who only signed his new three-year contract with Spurs two weeks ago.
His role could change a bit in the coming months. “During the individual training sessions, the coaches wanted me to be more aggressive. Now at camp we’re playing more about the five. I have the ball in my hand earlier in the offense or I am involved in actions earlier, ”Pöltl reported.
As a kick-off, San Antonio will be performing with the Memphis Grizzlies on December 23rd. Next opponents are the former champions Toronto Raptors (at home / December 26th) and away the New Orleans Pelicans (December 27th), before it will take place on December 30th. against the champion Los Angeles Lakers in his own hall.
